Mid Century Modern MCM: The Perfect Blend of Form and Function!

Mid Century Modern MCM Bureau renovation by J&N Furniture Flips

It has long been a dream of mine to live in an original mid century bungalow with high ceilings, brick fireplaces and huge picture windows. While our search for that perfect property continues, I look to online platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest for inspiration and admiration! They influence and fuel my love for MCM design frequently.

Renovating furniture has too always been something I love to do, and MCM style pieces are still my favourite. When my client projects suit, I will endeavour to source and renovate pieces to include in them. Helping to support individual design schemes, and my efforts in keeping them as sustainable as possible too. Putting actual love back into the furniture and watch it transform brings us such joy. Creating the transformation content over on our Instagram account J&N Furniture Flips brings us immense satisfaction, this, another dream I can happily say, has come true!

Anyway, I digress a little. I wanted to explain why I adore MCM design so much. It’s a tough one really because sometimes , we just love things for no apparent reason, it’s just what brings us joy and makes us smile and MCM does that for me. However, I will try and explain why it is indeed for me, perfect blend of form and function.

  1. It’s readily available and suits all budgets! Search places like EBay or Facebook Marketplace for bargain pieces ready to go or to get your DIY and spruce up if you want to. If it something unique you’re after, and the budget allows, good stores for finding these are Merchant and Found, Original Home Store and Alfred London but to name a few.

  2. They’re solid and made to last! As with most vintage pieces they generally really well made mostly from teak and oak wood. Top Tip: when you’re searching on eBay or fb marketplace make sure it is REAL wood and not imitation like Formica. I can spot these pretty easily but if you’re unsure ask the seller to clarify.

  3. They fit in with so many interior design schemes. I have found that they work particularly well in new builds because they immediately add character and warmth to the stark new walls. Still modern, but with that cool vintage appeal too. Equally, they can be added with ease into an older property, a country cottage, Scandinavian bungalow or London Town House for example. It’s just about getting the balance and mixture right but totally doable.

  4. Invites individuality into your interiors! Finding MCM pieces for our interior spaces can encourage a more unique experience and, well, just look damn cool!

  5. Brilliant storage! I’ve always found the proportions on a lot of the pieces to be good making them super versatile in their placement when planning a space. Pair that with the various storage opportunities a piece can offer, makes for not only a very functional choice of furniture but also beautiful in style. Truly giving that perfect blend of ‘Form and Function’.

I could talk more and more about this but I’ll leave it there for now, and maybe break this topic down for future articles as there’s more to say.
